Amritapuri – A Homeless Guy’s Visit To A Hidden Oasis

Hello readers,

I am in Amritapuri Ashram in Kerala and I want to share my experiences so far.

I arrived here on April 5th. They usually provide accommodation for only two or three days. It costs Rs. 50 per day in a dormitory. The food is free for the first three days, and then it is Rs. 100 per day. I booked accommodation for five days. The person in the accommodation office asked, “Why so long?” I explained that I want to seek approval for permanent or long-term accommodation from Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi) and for now, I want to immerse myself in ashram activities, do seva, listen to bhajans, etc.

This is an amazing place. I witnessed the embodiment of love and compassion on the very first day. I can perceive the genuineness in Amma’s teachings, her smile, her carefully chosen bhajans, which are either about bhakti or jnana, the satsangs by her disciples, and the darshan, the most important part.

When I approached her, she hugged me, whispered “amma kuttu” a few times in my ears, and gave me a candy. I expressed my interest in spirituality and wanting to permanently stay here. She smiled and asked, “You? Interested in spirituality?” I affirmed, explaining my divorced status and lack of other commitments. She chuckled and asked, “So you also left your wife?” She spoke very good Tamil. I then shared that I had been practicing sakshi bhavana meditation for many years, that I am homeless, and I really want to live here. She acknowledged my meditation practice and invited me to sit with a few devotees.

I anticipated she would discuss something with me after the darshan. She usually gives darshan until everyone who came to see her has had their chance. That day, it lasted until 12:30 am midnight. I’ve read that Amma has continuously given darshan for 20 hours, involving speaking, hugging, whispering in ears, and giving candy.

Since she didn’t express approval, I wondered what to do next. I learned that once you’ve had a darshan, you can have the next one only after 30 days.

Now, I intend to extend the accommodation for the next 30 days just to have another darshan and seek her approval. I have nowhere else to go, and I am deeply impressed to have discovered this hidden oasis,  a place where you can find a genuine guru in Amma.

I conversed with many Western devotees here, and they shared interesting stories. My sandals broke on the first day, and a guy from the US directed me to the Indian supermarket. After darshan, I spoke with a guy from Denmark who was also new here. In a coffee shop near the beach, I conversed with a young French lady who shared her story.

The next morning, I mistook a young Brahmacharini called Chandrika from the US for the French lady and asked her if she was her. She smiled and clarified, and we continued walking and talking. She imparted wisdom, saying, “Many people want to come to Amritapuri, but they keep delaying it. But some people accidentally end up here and find the home they were searching for. Unless you have the grace of Amma, you can’t come here!”

In an Indian cafe, I met an Italian lady who inquired if Amma said anything regarding my accommodation issue. When I said “no,” she burst into uncontrollable laughter, explaining that even Amma didn’t say anything, yet people here are quick to offer advice upon hearing others’ problems.

I resonate with the quote “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” from the Maha Upanishad, meaning “the world is one family.” Amritapuri embodies this quote by accommodating people from different countries in one place.

There is also a Kali temple, the house where Amma lived, and an elephant called Lakshmi in the ashram campus. I will delve into more detail about them in a separate article.

Every day brings surprises here, and the village is a beautiful coastal one. I definitely want to live here and engage in seva for as long as possible, maybe for a year or two until life presents another task.

I have some money left to cover one month’s accommodation and food, which is about Rs. 4500 if calculated. But I am unsure if they will extend the stay. If not, I’ll have to stay in lodges and eat outside until May 5th, which will be expensive.

I am now convinced that meeting Amma and learning more about her is part of my prarabdha. It has been a blessing.

For now, as long as I can stay in the ashram, I don’t need immediate financial assistance. However, I’m unsure about what will happen next. Nevertheless, I am in a total state of surrender regarding that.

I have been here for four days now, and I could write a book about what I’ve seen, heard, and experienced. I believe this is a new chapter in my life.

Finally, I want to emphasize that when you meet someone genuinely at a saintly level, you can easily recognize the fake ones. I will keep you updated about my experiences in the upcoming posts.

A New Beginning – Some Updates

Hello beloved readers,

I hope you are doing well. I want to share some updates with you about what is happening in my life, as I see that there is going to be a new beginning.

I joined a BPO job again on January 25th, 2023 (Sooryagayathri’s birthday). However, in a few months, I had to join another company as the process in the previous company was closed. Both were night shift jobs. However, the night shift doesn’t work for me anymore as I couldn’t properly eat or sleep. So I recently left the job due to facing some severe health issues.

I returned to my native place two weeks ago, but I didn’t have any place to stay. Consequently, I admitted myself to a government hospital where I received free treatment, accommodation, and food for 12 days. Some kind individuals offered financial help, which assisted me in managing my other expenses.

Yesterday, the doctor informed me that my health issues have been taken care of, and the treatment is complete. He advised me to be discharged. Despite my request to stay for one more week, he disagreed, citing hospital rules that prohibit keeping a patient once the treatment is complete. He also mentioned, “I understand why you want to stay here. You don’t have any job or place to stay. However, this isn’t like a private home. If we keep a patient longer than necessary, the hospital management will question us.”

During my stay in the hospital, I reached out to an ashram in Kerala seeking permanent accommodation. At present, I prefer not to disclose the ashram’s name, but I may do so in the future. They have instructed me to visit them directly and seek permission from the ashram’s founder for permanent accommodation. I plan to visit the ashram in the next 3-4 days.

Currently, I am staying in a lodge in Tiruchendur where I found simple accommodation for Rs.200 per day. The room is quite hot, and the cost of food is high. I intend to spend some quiet time here, visiting the beach and temples, and making clear plans. Additionally, I would like to spend time getting to know the ashram before my visit.

I hope to be accepted at the ashram for permanent accommodation, which would resolve my practical challenges in finding food, clothing, and shelter. Many kind individuals have helped me thus far, and I am sincerely grateful to them. However, having a significant amount in my account would make me much more comfortable in facing challenges and making my life easier. If you wish to donate, please visit this link for details: https://shanmugamp.org/donate/.

I genuinely hope to be accepted at the ashram for permanent accommodation so that I can serve there without worrying about basic necessities. If I am not accepted, I will have to seek an alternate solution.

2024’s Sunrise: Waking Up to Fitness, Wellness, and Words

The beginning of this New Year, 2024, has brought an abundance of energy, and improved health.. I wanted to take a moment to share some recent highlights.

My fitness journey has taken a front seat, with regular workouts at the gym, invigorating runs, and refreshing walks. Yesterday, I had a fantastic running session in a nearby park, surrounded by diverse plants. The circular path, approximately 320 meters in diameter, allows me to complete one kilometer with just four laps plus a few extra steps.

Having shed a considerable amount of weight, I treated myself to new, well-fitting clothes. Interestingly, my very old clothes from 2022 still fit, a testament to the successful strength training in the gym.

Embracing a healthier lifestyle, I’ve recently purchased an electric cooker and started preparing my meals. Mornings kick off with a nutritious blend of oats, fruits, nuts, and whey protein in my Muesli. For lunch, I enjoy a hearty porridge made from a mix of multigrains, including Ragi, Bajra, Jowar, Red rice, corn, barley, wheat, green gram, fried gram, almonds, cashews, and peanuts.

I’ve had the privilege of attending a function featuring the renowned Tamil speaker, Smt. Bharathi Baskar (பாரதி பாஸ்கர்), on January 1st. Her speech, centered around Pamban Swamigal, left a lasting impression. During the event, I had the opportunity to present two copies of my Tamil poetry book, ‘Malayorak Kavithaigal,’ and capture some memorable moments.

The speech was about Pamban Swamigal. Pamban Gurudasa Swamigal, affectionately known as Pamban Swamigal, was a revered Indian Tamil Hindu saint and poet. His devotion centered around the Tamil god Murugan, and he expressed his profound reverence through the composition of heartfelt poems in praise of the deity. The sacred place where he rests in eternal peace, his samadhi, is situated in Tiruvanmiyur, Chennai.

This video is the recording of her entire speech:

About the Tamil orator Smt. Bharathi Bhaskar:

Bharathi Baskar stands out as a prominent figure in the realm of Tamil oratory, known for her compelling speeches and insightful presentations. Her eloquence extends to a diverse range of social, cultural, and motivational subjects in the Tamil language. Renowned for her remarkable ability to articulate complex ideas in a manner that is both relatable and engaging, Bharathi Baskar has garnered widespread acclaim.

Her oratory prowess shines particularly bright as she addresses contemporary issues, offering profound insights and diverse perspectives that strike a chord with a broad audience. Beyond her captivating oratory skills, Bharathi Baskar has also made a mark as a writer, contributing thought-provoking articles and essays to various Tamil publications.

About my Tamil poetry book:

If you’d like to show your support for my Tamil poetry journey, you can purchase the book by clicking on this link: https://notionpress.com/read/malaiyorak-kavithaigal.

I’m grateful to the readers who supported me in acquiring the essentials that have positively impacted my life, enabling me to maintain good health, stay active, and find inspiration for writing more articles. Wishing everyone a joyful New Year filled with health and happiness.

From Meals to Mantras: My Multifaceted Kitchen-Library-Pooja Sanctuary

Hello everyone,

How is the new year going for you?

As I step into this fresh year, anticipation and enthusiasm fill my spirit. I’m brimming with new plans, strategies, and upcoming projects centered around my content, which delves into spirituality, mental and physical health, and beyond.

Speaking from the perspective of a wounded healer, I’ve traversed through trauma, endured abuse, battled addiction, faced homelessness, and embarked on a sincere spiritual journey, drawing profound lessons from every experience. This year promises to be a chapter of growth, resilience, and the continued sharing of insights gained along this transformative journey.

This morning, I visited the nearby Ramar temple—a stunning sanctuary in the heart of the city. I am planning an upcoming post on Rama, drawing insights not only from the Ramayana but also from spiritual texts like Yoga Vashistam and Adyatma Ramayanam. For those on a spiritual journey, there are numerous lessons to glean from Rama’s life.

At Ramar temple today, 1/1/2024

Yesterday, the final day of the year, began with a 6-kilometer morning walk and followed by cleaning my room. I estimate that I burned around 800 calories during this routine. Recognizing the tendency for people to overestimate calorie expenditure and underestimate consumption, I’ve adjusted my estimate to a more realistic 800 calories, steering clear of the common underestimation pitfall.

A corner of my room serves as a versatile space, functioning as a kitchen, library, and pooja room. I took the time to clean and organize it yesterday, and now, the atmosphere is imbued with the grace of Annapoorni and Saraswathi.

These are the statues I got at the beginning of 2022, and I really like them. Each statue has a special story.

For example, the small Hanuman statue made of stone was bought in Tiruvannamalai in July 2022 after I went to Sooryagayathri’s concert in Gowribidanur. The Krishna statue is the one I ordered from Amazon because I loved Sooryagayathri’s Gopigopalam song and I wanted to buy a statue similar to one that I saw in the music video. The picture of Lord Murugan in the form of Kolanchiappar was bought in Vridhachalam.

I stayed near Vridhachalam for two months to find an old school friend named Ramesh, but unfortunately, I never saw him. I wanted to make sure he was okay because Sooryagayathri looks exactly like him, and sometimes I think he is reborn as her. I had a strong belief in finding out if my suspicion was true. I searched for Ramesh in Ramanattam, a small village near Thozhudur, where he used to live with his parents. I asked a lot of people, but no one could tell me where he was. I remember him saying his native place was Thirukovilur. I even went there one day. Unfortunately, I never found him even after staying in Tittagudi for two months, where the school we studied was located. Those two months were unforgettable, and some interesting things happened during that time that I haven’t shared in a blog post yet.

So, every statue here brings back sweet memories with interesting and touching stories. The little stones you see near the statues are marbles of different colors that I bought because I really like them. They look beautiful. There are also a couple of Rudraksha beads. I made a couple of Shivalingas with M-Seal, a special kind of sealant, with my own hands. M-Seal is a type of epoxy, resin-based, multipurpose sealant with a unique combination of epoxy putty and adhesive.

Here is a glimpse of my library. I have copies of the Tamil translation of all four Vedas in seven volumes.

Rig Veda alone spans three volumes. Additionally, I possess crucial texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, Thirumanthiram, Thiruvasagam, and poems by Bharathiyar. Alongside these, there are numerous smaller books aimed at aiding in the learning of Malayalam. I need to restart my Malayalam learning journey as I unintentionally set it aside for the past six months. The same applies to my Sanskrit learning as well.

I’ve accumulated video and audio lessons on Carnatic music, diligently practicing to the point of mastering all 14 from sarali varisai and completing Jandai varisai. However, amidst relocations and various life events, the practice was momentarily disrupted. Nevertheless, I am determined to resume and redouble my efforts in the coming year. One of my musical aspirations is to flawlessly sing Niravana Shatkam, following the tune composed by Sooryagayathri. It’s a goal that I am committed to achieving through dedicated practice

As we step into the new year of 2024, it marks a period of plans, strategies, resolutions, and unwavering convictions for me. I extend warm New Year wishes to all of you. Stay connected, as my upcoming post will delve into the world of the most straightforward and accessible exercise – walking. This piece will be detailed and offer a unique perspective distinct from content you may have encountered before.

For years, I’ve tirelessly learned, practiced, and shared insights on spiritual, physical and mental well being, I’ve even earned a couple of Udemy certificates to validate my dedication. But here’s the truth: I want to do more.

From Empty Stomachs to Empowering Content: Support My Health & Blog Mission in 2024

I have never anticipated a new year as much as I have for the upcoming year 2024. There are multiple reasons for this excitement. One is a deeply personal reason that is very close to my heart. Another reason is that the blog will now shift its focus to include health, fitness, nutrition, and all aspects of physical well-being, in addition to the existing spiritual, political, religious, and psychological content, as well as my own poetry.

As always, I share my personal experiences, avoiding the mere compilation of articles through online searches. The content I create will be the outcome of numerous experiments, calorie and nutrient value calculations, product comparisons, and other insights derived solely from my personal experiences.

I had previously achieved great success in shaping and maintaining my health during the period between October 2021 and June 2022 while consistently going to the gym. However, everything changed after I had to relocate. I faced the challenge of finding a place to stay and securing a job to support myself, as I was now entirely on my own. Rebuilding my practical life from scratch, I struggled to obtain a somewhat stable job to provide for my basic needs.

The remainder of 2022 proved to be extremely challenging, as I found myself in precarious living situations, nearly facing homelessness. It was only in the beginning of 2023 that I settled in one place and began the slow process of recovery, eventually reaching the same energy levels and health that I had in the beginning of 2022.

Throughout this challenging period, many kind-hearted people supported me by offering donations. I sincerely hope, wish, and pray for their good health, happiness, wealth, and spiritual upliftment.

The job I currently hold requires me to work night shifts, making proper sleep and nutrition a challenge. This challenge becomes even more significant as I aim to restart my fitness routine and share helpful ideas with my readers. Despite these challenges, I have been working out in the gym and, in recent weeks, have rarely consumed food outside. I have developed a DIY meal preparation routine, often boiling water in an electric kettle and using it for preparing meals like rolled oats, pasta, and multigrain health mixes. I recently shared a blog post about a DIY meal replacement shake titled ‘Crafting the Ultimate DIY Meal Replacement Shake: Nutrient-Rich, Cost-Effective, and Customizable.’

When I return to my room in the early morning at around 5:30 AM, I have the option to buy take-away food from the bus station, but the prices are exorbitant during those early hours. Eating a regular breakfast at 5:30 AM also does not appeal to me. However, a healthy mix of oats and soya provides me with a nutritious meal. I also incorporate whey protein into my diet and occasionally buy bananas.

As I am passionate about sharing my fitness journey in 2024, I face new requirements and financial challenges. Donations from generous individuals have enabled me to join a gym, undergo medical tests, consult with doctors as needed, and purchase medicines for at least two weeks. I have also invested in acquiring items that help me prepare my own food. However, I still need further assistance to sustain these efforts until my blog gains enough visibility for me to earn from ads and affiliate programs.

Immediate expenses include purchasing the next set of medicines for the next two weeks or a month. Additionally, I am planning to upgrade my cooking setup with a small electric cooker, allowing me to boil vegetables and grains. This investment will alleviate concerns about food availability and prices. Without such an option, I used to go to bed on an empty stomach, waking up extremely hungry by 11 am, as restaurants typically start serving lunch only after 12:30 PM.

Another essential requirement is obtaining new fitting clothes. Having put on a considerable amount of weight last year, I now face challenges in finding clothes that fit well. With my ongoing efforts to reshape my body, I notice my pants becoming loose around the waist, and my shirts appearing too big. I am in need of appropriate clothing.

Now, let’s talk about your role: My dream of sharing my fitness journey, and also taking care of my own life, needs and health needs a bit of support. Your generous donations have already helped me with a gym membership, medical care, and essential cooking tools. But until my blog takes off, I’m in need of a little more assistance:

Any further donations received will be used to purchase medicines, cooking essentials, an electric cooker, a small table with a shelf, and new clothes. Your support is making a significant difference, and I am grateful for it. Anticipate more valuable content in the New Year.

Why support me, you ask? Your donation isn’t just about providing food and medicine; it fuels ongoing research, experiments, and content that aims to inspire and inform. Every contribution helps me continue on this journey and share my experiences with the world.

If my writing resonates with you, please consider making a donation https://shanmugamp.org/donate/. Together, let’s make 2024 a year of transformative growth! Thank you for being a part of this exciting journey.
